Visual and Performing Arts Courses
710 Art 1 (2 semesters)
This one year course is designed to give students an opportunity to explore art in a variety of media, which may include; graphite, charcoal, oil pastel, pen & ink, watercolor, scratch design, acrylics and clay. Art history and art appreciation are introduced and woven into each area of study. Elements and principles of design and creative problem solving are also introduced. Students are responsible for creating and maintaining their own electronic portfolio.
720 Art 2 (2 semesters)
This one year course is designed as a more in depth study of the various art media and content including graphite, white and black charcoal, acrylics, oil paints watercolor, clay sculpture, drawing from life, portraiture, pottery, soft pastels, photography, printmaking, and art history incorporation. Students are responsible for creating and maintaining their own electronic portfolio.
Prerequisite: Art I with at least a B-
730 Art 3-4 (2 semesters)
The course is designed to expand a student’s experience and knowledge of art history, art production, and creative problem solving, tying projects to big, meaningful ideas. Many of the media used previously will be re-evaluated and worked upon for new effects and strengths. In addition a strong emphasis is placed on mastery of life drawing and on site drawing. Mastery of values and compositions is a goal. The course is designed to push student's to develop their skills and ideas at an advancing and competitive level. Students are responsible for creating and maintaining their own electronic portfolio.
Prerequisite: Art 2
800 Band (2 semesters)
Band is a performance intensive course and is aimed at the development of the musician, promotion of school and community spirit, and personal expression through music. When personnel permits, the “Knight” band performs as a field or stands band for the first nine weeks of school. By early November, the band begins focusing entirely on concert music and performs for holiday, festival and spring concerts. Special activities include trips out of town or out of state, basketball band, solo/ensemble festival, honors band, and other class activities. There is also a scholarship for band students.
801 Chorus (2 semesters)
Students learn the basics of good singing technique, while being exposed to music of all styles. The Norway High School Chorus provides opportunity for singing at several area events, travel, and for many extra challenges if desired, including solo ensemble and state honors choir. Students are not required to sing alone in class – group/ ensemble singing only! Many opportunities for service hours, leadership experience, and scholarships exist. Come join the “mighty chorus!”
